On the night of January 25, 1994, when he was 30 years old, C. Sadanandan Master was attacked by CPI(M) goons near his home village of Perinchery in Kannur, Kerala. In this act of violence, both his legs were severed.

He was left bleeding on the roadside, and it was some time before police arrived and took him to the hospital, by which point he had lost consciousness. This brutal incident, which he recalls in a “calm, detached manner,” occurred after he had shifted his political allegiance.

Despite this life-altering injury, he demonstrated remarkable resilience. He returned to teaching in 1999 and has continued his work as a social science teacher. He has also remained active in public life and politics, contesting elections and serving in various capacities within organizations.

His story of survival and continued dedication to public service, despite the severe physical impact of the attack, has led to him being referred to as a “living martyr.” Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in congratulating him on his Rajya Sabha nomination, specifically highlighted his “courage and refusal to bow to injustice,” and how “violence and intimidation couldn’t deter his spirit towards national development.”

He has also been active in organizations like the National Teachers’ Union and the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) think tank, Bharatiya Vichara Kendram.
