Karnataka Farmers Get MSP Procurement Approval for Soybean Moong and Sunflower

The central government has approved the procurement of three important kharif crops from Karnataka under the Price Support Scheme. The decision covers soybean moong and sunflower and is aimed at helping farmers avoid distress sales when market prices weaken.

The approval comes as kharif crops begin reaching markets across the state. Farmers often face pressure to sell their produce when prices fall during the arrival season. Government procurement at the Minimum Support Price can provide an alternative route for eligible farmers to sell their produce.

According to the proposal, the approved procurement quantities include 115500 metric tonnes of soybean, 38250 metric tonnes of moong and 13413 metric tonnes of sunflower.

The decision follows a request made to the Union Agriculture Ministry concerning procurement support for Karnataka farmers. Union Minister Pralhad Joshi has welcomed the approval and thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan for responding to the proposal.

The government has already announced the MSP rates for kharif crops for the 2026 27 marketing season. The official MSP for soybean is Rs 5708 per quintal, while moong has an MSP of Rs 8780 per quintal and sunflower seed has an MSP of Rs 8343 per quintal.

For farmers, the procurement decision is significant because market prices can change quickly during the harvest period. When arrivals increase, farmers may face lower offers from private buyers. Procurement under the support scheme is intended to provide a government backed option for eligible produce.

The approved quantities also show the scale of the proposed intervention. Soybean accounts for the largest procurement quantity at 115500 metric tonnes, followed by moong at 38250 metric tonnes. Sunflower procurement has been approved for 13413 metric tonnes.

The Price Support Scheme is used for procurement of notified pulses oilseeds and other eligible crops when conditions meet the scheme requirements. The broader objective is to support farmers with remunerative prices and reduce the possibility of distress sales.

The Centre has taken similar procurement decisions for Karnataka in the past. In May 2026, the Union Agriculture Ministry announced approval for procurement of 9023 metric tonnes of sunflower in Karnataka under the Price Support Scheme for the rabi 2026 season.

The latest approval is therefore expected to be closely watched by farmers growing soybean moong and sunflower across Karnataka. The actual benefit for individual farmers will depend on procurement arrangements eligibility conditions and the quantity accepted through the designated procurement system.

The move also comes at a time when farm prices remain an important concern for growers preparing to sell their harvest. Government procurement can provide some protection when open market prices fall below the announced support level, although procurement itself is subject to scheme rules and approved quantities.

Pralhad Joshi has described the decision as an important step towards protecting the interests of Karnataka farmers. His statement also thanked the Prime Minister and Union Agriculture Minister for approving the proposal concerning the three crops.

For farmers, the immediate focus will now be on the opening of procurement centres and the procedures for registration and sale. Details regarding procurement locations eligibility and operational arrangements will determine how easily growers can access the scheme.

The Centre has separately maintained the MSP framework for the 2026 27 kharif marketing season, with soybean moong and sunflower among the crops covered by the announced support prices.

With the procurement approval now in place, Karnataka farmers growing these three crops will be looking for timely implementation at the ground level. Smooth procurement and prompt payment will be important for ensuring that the announced support reaches farmers during the harvest period.
