Mayawati’s Bold Decision Triggers Major Leadership Change in BSP

Lucknow: In a major political development that could reshape the future of the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), party chief Mayawati has removed her nephew and former political heir Akash Anand from all party responsibilities. The move comes as part of what she describes as an effort to place the interests of the party and the Bahujan movement above family ties.

Mayawati also relieved Akash Anand’s sister of her party responsibilities, reiterating that BSP has no place for nepotism and that organisational discipline remains the party’s highest priority.

Why Was Akash Anand Removed?

Explaining her decision, Mayawati alleged that Akash Anand’s behaviour changed after his marriage and claimed that he had come under the influence of his father-in-law, Ashok Siddharth. She said such influences could weaken the Bahujan movement and insisted that the party would not compromise on discipline under any circumstances.

Akash Anand had earlier faced criticism during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections over his controversial speeches, following which questions were raised about his political maturity.

Ishan Anand Likely to Get Bigger Role:

Even as Akash Anand has been sidelined, Mayawati has indicated that his younger brother Ishan Anand could be entrusted with a significant organisational responsibility.

However, she made it clear that Ishan’s future in the party would depend entirely on his conduct. She warned that if he engages in anti-party activities or fails to uphold party discipline, he too would be removed immediately, and the responsibility would instead be handed over to a committed Dalit worker.

Mayawati Cites Ambedkar and Kanshi Ram:

To reinforce her stand against nepotism, Mayawati referred to the ideals of BSP founder Kanshi Ram and recalled an instance from 1956, when Dr. B.R. Ambedkar reportedly wrote a stern letter to his son Yashwant Ambedkar over issues related to the Buddha Bhushan Press. She said the episode reflected the importance of discipline and accountability over personal relationships.

Crucial National Meeting on September 23:

The BSP is currently facing significant political challenges, particularly among young Dalit voters, many of whom are increasingly supporting Chandrashekhar Azad’s Azad Samaj Party.

Against this backdrop, the BSP has convened an All India National Meeting on September 23, where major organisational changes and leadership decisions are expected. Political observers believe the meeting could determine the party’s strategy to revive its electoral fortunes ahead of future elections.
