BJP leader assaulted by mob over alleged stay with widow at private homestay in Chikkamagaluru
Chikkamagaluru: A BJP leader and former chairman of the Chikkamagaluru Urban Development Authority (CUDA), Anand, was allegedly assaulted by a group of youths after he was accused of staying with a widowed woman at a private homestay in Chikkamagaluru district.
The incident, which took place on the Chikkamagaluru–Kadur road, has sparked widespread discussion after videos of the assault went viral on social media platforms. According to police sources, Anand was staying at a private homestay along with a woman from Mattavara village in Chikkamagaluru taluk.
Information about their stay reportedly reached villagers from the woman’s native village, following which a group of locals gathered and stormed the homestay. The mob allegedly checked several rooms before finding Anand with the woman, after which they assaulted him.
Videos circulating online show Anand being attacked by multiple youths, while bystanders are seen arguing and questioning him. The footage has triggered public debate, with many condemning the act of mob violence, while others raised moral questions over the incident.
Soon after receiving information, Chikkamagaluru Rural Police rushed to the spot and managed to bring the situation under control. Police officials stated that no formal complaint has been filed by either party so far, and hence no case has been registered in connection with the assault.
“As of now, neither the victim nor the attackers have approached us with a complaint. We have counselled both sides and dispersed the crowd,” a senior police officer said. However, officials confirmed that they are closely monitoring the situation, especially in view of the viral video evidence.
Preliminary information suggests that the woman involved is a widow and was acquainted with Anand. The two reportedly decided to stay at the homestay together, which led to objections from the woman’s villagers after they came to know about it. The sudden attack appears to have been triggered by social stigma and local resentment, police said.
While the immediate tension has been defused, concerns remain over whether the incident could escalate further or lead to prolonged animosity between the two sides. Legal experts have pointed out that assault and vigilantism cannot be justified, irrespective of personal or moral judgments, and warned that police could take suo motu action based on the video evidence if required.
For now, the police have maintained that peace prevails in the area, but the episode has once again brought focus on issues of moral policing, mob justice and personal freedom in Karnataka’s rural pockets.
