Techie woman dies of suffocation in Bengaluru apartment fire
Bengaluru: A tragic incident of a woman techie losing her life due to suffocation after a fire broke out in her rented apartment has come to light from Ramamurthynagar in east Bengaluru. The incident occurred on the night of January 3 but was reported late.
The deceased has been identified as Sharmila (34), a native of Mangaluru. She had moved to Bengaluru about a year ago and was working as a software engineer with Accenture Software. Sharmila was residing alone in a rented flat located in Subramanya Badavane under the Ramamurthynagar police station limits.
According to police sources, around 10.30 pm on the night of the incident, a fire broke out in one of the rooms of the flat, leading to heavy smoke engulfing the premises. Noticing smoke emanating from the apartment, the house owner, Vijayendra, immediately alerted the Ramamurthynagar police.
Fire and emergency services personnel, along with the police, rushed to the spot and broke open the door to enter the flat. By then, the bedroom and hall were filled with thick smoke, and parts of the house had caught fire. The fire was quickly doused, and during inspection, Sharmila was found unconscious inside the house.
She was immediately shifted to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared her brought dead. Preliminary investigations suggest that she was unable to escape from the room due to the fire and smoke, leading to suffocation and death.
Police suspect that the fire may have been caused by a short circuit, overheating of electrical equipment such as a laptop, or possibly a candle. The bed, curtains, and other household items in the room were completely gutted in the fire. The scene was inspected by the Scene of Crime Officers (SOCO) and the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) team.
An Unnatural Death Report (UDR) has been registered at the Ramamurthynagar police station, and further investigation is underway. Police are awaiting detailed forensic reports to ascertain the exact cause of the fire.
