A missing person investigation in Uttar Pradesh’s Agra has taken a shocking turn after police discovered the body of a man buried beneath the bathroom floor of his own house. His wife, who had repeatedly claimed he had gone missing, has now been arrested in connection with the alleged murder.
The victim, identified as 44 year old Surendra Sharma, had been reported missing on May 26. For nearly 45 days, police searched for him while his wife, Ruby Sharma, reportedly cooperated with investigators and publicly pleaded for help in finding her husband. However, inconsistencies in her statements and growing suspicion from Surendra’s family prompted officers to examine the case more closely.
The breakthrough came after police searched the couple’s residence in the Renuka Dham Colony area of Agra. Workers were called in to remove the bathroom flooring, where investigators recovered skeletal remains believed to be those of Surendra. The remains have been sent for postmortem examination to determine the exact cause of death.
According to investigators, Ruby allegedly buried her husband’s body beneath the bathroom floor before covering the area with concrete and installing new tiles to conceal the crime. Despite allegedly knowing where the body was hidden, she continued living in the house and maintained that her husband had disappeared.
Police suspect the murder may have taken place on May 18. During questioning, investigators alleged that Ruby served Surendra a bowl of kheer mixed with a large quantity of sleeping pills. After he lost consciousness, he was allegedly killed. Authorities are awaiting the postmortem report to establish the precise cause of death.
Investigators further claimed that the morning after the alleged crime, Ruby dropped the couple’s two daughters at a relative’s house before returning home. She then allegedly dug a pit inside the bathroom, buried the body, sealed the area with concrete, and laid fresh tiles in an attempt to erase all evidence.
The case gained momentum after Surendra’s brother noticed suspicious withdrawals from the family’s pension account even after Surendra was reported missing. Since Surendra had been carrying the ATM card before his disappearance, the unusual transactions raised fresh questions and directed police attention toward Ruby.
Police are also investigating whether anyone else helped conceal the body or assisted in the crime. Officials said the investigation remains active and further arrests cannot be ruled out if additional evidence emerges.
According to police, the couple had been married for around 16 years and had two daughters. Neighbours told investigators that the couple frequently argued. They also claimed Surendra had been unemployed for some time, struggled with alcohol addiction, and often demanded money from his wife, leading to repeated domestic disputes.
Authorities have not yet announced the final cause of death, and investigators are waiting for forensic and postmortem findings before filing additional charges in the case.
