Heavy Rain Alert for Coastal Karnataka as IMD Issues Yellow Warning for Several Districts

The southwest monsoon continues to influence weather conditions across Karnataka, with the India Meteorological Department forecasting another spell of widespread rainfall across several parts of the state. Coastal Karnataka and the Malnad region are expected to receive the heaviest showers, prompting a Yellow Alert for a number of districts. While rainfall intensity may vary from region to region, weather officials have advised residents to remain cautious as strong winds and intermittent heavy rain could affect normal daily activities.

According to the latest forecast, districts along the Karnataka coast are likely to experience the most significant rainfall. Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and Uttara Kannada are expected to witness heavy showers at isolated places, accompanied by gusty winds reaching speeds of around 30 to 40 kilometers per hour. The combination of persistent rain and strong winds may lead to waterlogging in low lying areas, slower traffic movement and disruptions to outdoor activities.

The Malnad belt is also expected to remain under the influence of active monsoon conditions. Shivamogga has been identified as one of the districts likely to receive heavy rainfall, while Chikkamagaluru is also expected to witness intense showers in several locations. Wind speeds in these areas could increase to around 40 to 50 kilometers per hour during periods of heavy rain, making it advisable for residents to avoid unnecessary travel whenever weather conditions worsen.

Meteorologists say the current weather pattern reflects the continued strength of the southwest monsoon over coastal Karnataka. Moisture laden winds from the Arabian Sea are supporting widespread cloud formation, leading to repeated spells of rain across the region. These conditions are expected to help maintain healthy water levels in rivers, reservoirs and agricultural fields, although localized flooding cannot be ruled out where rainfall becomes particularly intense.

Rainfall is not expected to remain confined to the coastal belt alone. Several districts across southern interior Karnataka are also likely to receive moderate showers during the day. Bengaluru Urban, Bengaluru Rural, Mysuru, Mandya, Ramanagara, Hassan, Kodagu, Tumakuru, Kolar, Chikkaballapur, Chamarajanagar, Davanagere, Vijayanagara, Ballari and Chitradurga are all included in the latest rainfall forecast.

In Bengaluru, cloudy skies are expected to dominate for most of the day, with intermittent rain likely during the afternoon and evening hours. Moderate showers could provide temporary relief from daytime temperatures while also leading to slower traffic movement on major roads during peak travel hours. Commuters are advised to plan their journeys in advance and allow additional travel time if rain intensifies during office hours.

Strong surface winds of around 40 to 50 kilometers per hour are also expected across many southern interior districts. Such wind speeds may occasionally cause tree branches to fall or create minor disruptions in areas with ongoing construction work. Authorities have urged the public to stay alert during periods of heavy rainfall and avoid sheltering beneath weak structures or large trees during thunderstorms.

Northern Karnataka is also likely to receive widespread rainfall, although the intensity is expected to be comparatively lower in several districts. Belagavi may experience isolated heavy showers, while Bagalkote, Bidar, Gadag, Kalaburagi, Koppal, Raichur, Vijayapura, Dharwad, Haveri and Yadgir are forecast to receive light to moderate rainfall at multiple locations.

Agricultural experts believe the continuing rainfall will benefit standing crops across much of the state, particularly paddy, maize, sugarcane and horticultural plantations that depend on regular monsoon showers. Farmers in rain fed regions are expected to benefit from the improved soil moisture, reducing dependence on irrigation. However, excessive rainfall in certain locations may require close monitoring to prevent crop damage caused by waterlogging.

The weather department noted that monsoon activity has remained generally normal across coastal Karnataka and northern interior districts in recent days, while rainfall over southern interior Karnataka has been comparatively weaker. The latest forecast indicates that rainfall activity is likely to strengthen across several southern districts, helping distribute monsoon showers more evenly across the state.

Recent rainfall observations also highlight the active nature of the current weather system. Among the highest rainfall totals recorded recently was Beltangady in Dakshina Kannada district, where approximately 9 centimeters of rain was reported. Similar heavy spells have been observed in other coastal pockets, contributing to rising water levels in local streams and reservoirs.

The rainfall is also expected to improve groundwater recharge and benefit drinking water sources in many districts. Lakes, tanks and village ponds that rely on seasonal rainfall are gradually receiving fresh inflows, which could help ensure better water availability during the coming months. At the same time, local authorities continue to monitor river levels to prevent any flood related risks in vulnerable areas.

Weather experts have advised fishermen operating along the Karnataka coastline to stay updated with official weather bulletins, particularly when strong winds accompany heavy rainfall. Although no major cyclone related threat has been indicated, rough sea conditions may develop temporarily during periods of intense monsoon activity.

Residents living in landslide prone regions of the Western Ghats have also been urged to remain vigilant. Continuous rainfall over several days can weaken soil stability in hilly terrain, increasing the possibility of minor landslides or falling rocks along vulnerable road stretches. Travelers heading toward hill stations or forest areas are advised to check weather conditions before beginning their journey.

The forecast indicates that wet weather is likely to continue beyond today. The India Meteorological Department expects heavy rainfall to persist on August 8 across Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and Uttara Kannada districts. Shivamogga and Chikkamagaluru are also expected to remain under the influence of active monsoon conditions, with isolated heavy showers continuing into the following day.

With the monsoon showing no immediate signs of weakening over coastal Karnataka, residents are encouraged to remain prepared for changing weather conditions. Carrying rain protection, monitoring official forecasts and avoiding unnecessary travel during periods of intense rainfall can help minimize inconvenience and ensure safety as the state experiences another active phase of the rainy season.
