Six family members Swept Away in Markonahalli Dam tragedy; two bodies found
A tragic incident occurred near Markonahalli Dam in Tumakuru district on October 7, when six members of the same family were swept away while swimming. The dam, located in Kunigal taluk near Yediyur, became the site of a major search and rescue operation after the family members entered the water and were caught by the strong current.
Authorities have confirmed that the bodies of two victims, identified as Sajia and Arbhin, have been recovered. One person, Nawaz, was rescued from the water and is currently undergoing treatment at a local hospital. However, four other members—Tabasum (45), Shabana (44), Mifra (4), and Mahib (1)—are still missing, and an intensive search is underway to locate them.
Reports indicate that the family, residents of BG Palya in Tumakuru city, had visited relatives in Magadipalya village of Kunigal taluk. After having lunch together, they went for a walk near the dam when the unfortunate incident took place. Witnesses say that as they entered the backwater canal, the forceful flow of water quickly swept them away.
Police teams from Huliyurudurga and Amruthur rushed to the scene upon receiving news of the incident. Emergency responders and local officials are continuing search operations in and around the dam area. The tragedy has shocked the local community, and authorities are urging people to be cautious around water bodies, especially during periods of strong water flow.
The incident follows recent water-related tragedies in Karnataka, highlighting ongoing concerns about safety near dams and rivers during the monsoon season.
