Hidden camera found in women’s toilet at Bengaluru theatre, FIR filed against staff and management
Bengaluru: In a shocking incident that has raised serious concerns over women’s safety in public spaces, a hidden camera was allegedly used to record videos inside the women’s toilet of Sandhya Theatre in Madiwala, Bengaluru.
Based on a complaint filed by a woman techie, the Madiwala police have registered an FIR against the theatre management and two staff members, identified as Rajesh and Kamal, and launched a detailed investigation into the case.
According to police sources, the incident took place on Sunday evening when the complainant, a woman software professional, visited Sandhya Theatre along with her friends to watch a movie.
During the interval, around 8.30 pm, the women went to the theatre’s washroom. To their shock, they noticed a man secretly recording videos using a mobile phone inside the women’s toilet.
The complainant immediately alerted her husband and, along with others, managed to catch hold of the accused. Upon checking his mobile phone, several private videos of women, including those of the complainant and her friends, were allegedly found.
The accused was later identified as Rajesh, a staff member who had reportedly joined the theatre only about a month ago. When confronted about who instructed him to record the videos, Rajesh allegedly named another staff member, Kamal.
Following this, the complainant dialled the 112 police helpline. Madiwala police rushed to the spot, took the accused into custody, and seized the mobile phone used for recording as evidence.
Police sources said that several private videos of different women were found on the seized phone, raising suspicions that such illegal recording may have been going on for several days. An FIR has been registered against Rajesh, Kamal, and the Sandhya Theatre management for their alleged involvement and negligence in the matter.
The incident triggered outrage among women present at the theatre, and the accused was reportedly confronted and assaulted by members of the public before police intervened and brought the situation under control. The complainant has demanded strict legal action to ensure justice and prevent such incidents in the future.
Police officials said the safety of the complainant has been ensured and further investigation is underway to determine whether the videos were shared or uploaded online, and whether more people were involved in the crime. The theatre management’s role and responsibility are also being probed.
The incident has once again sparked a debate on women’s safety in public places, recalling similar hidden camera controversies reported in the past, including one at a paramedical college in Udupi that had caused widespread outrage.
