Australian cricketer: The cricket world is indeed in shock following the news that Australian legend Damien Martyn has been placed in an induced coma after being diagnosed with meningitis.

Reports on December 31, 2025, confirm that Martyn, 54, remains in a serious condition at Gold Coast University Hospital. He reportedly fell ill on Boxing Day (December 26) after initially thinking he just needed to lie down to rest.

Medical Condition & Treatment:

Martyn is fighting meningitis, a dangerous inflammation of the membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord. Doctors placed him in a coma to assist his body in fighting the infection and to manage potential brain swelling.

While his condition is critical, there are reported hopes from medical staff that he may be brought out of the coma in the coming days as they monitor his response to treatment.

Martyn is revered for his technical perfection and bravery. Many fans are recalling his legendary unbeaten 88 in the 2003 World Cup Final, which he scored while playing with a broken finger. He was also a pivotal figure in Australia’s historic 2004 series win in India, where he was named Player of the Series.

Just days before falling ill, Martyn had posted on social media expressing his excitement for the Boxing Day Test at the MCG, calling it a “cauldron” he wished he could play in one more time.
