Prison Mobile Phone Case: Probe Ordered Into Phone Found in Prajwal Revanna Barrack
A special team led by a prison department DIG will investigate how a mobile phone entered Parappana Agrahara prison and whether officials helped facilitate its use.
A new investigation has been ordered after a mobile phone was reportedly found in the barrack of former MP Prajwal Revanna during a Central Crime Branch raid at Bengaluru’s Parappana Agrahara Central Prison.
The Department of Prisons and Correctional Services has formed a team headed by DIG Jinendra Khanagavi to examine the circumstances surrounding the discovery. Prison DGP Alok Kumar has directed the team to investigate the matter from all possible angles and submit a report.
One of the key questions before investigators is how the phone entered a high security prison in the first place. The probe will also look into who allegedly provided the device to Prajwal Revanna and how long it may have been used.
The issue has raised questions about security inside the prison. Officials have previously faced concerns over mobile phones and SIM cards being used inside the facility despite security measures and mobile signal jammers installed around the prison premises.
According to the prison department, Airtel SIM cards, including some reportedly linked to Andhra Pradesh, have been detected inside the jail. Officials had allegedly been alerted about such incidents earlier as well.
The investigation will therefore examine whether the latest incident was the result of a security lapse or whether individuals inside the prison helped bring in or operate the device. If the involvement of prison personnel is established, disciplinary action is expected.
DGP Alok Kumar has also discussed the matter with DIG Jinendra Khanagavi as the department begins the inquiry.
Home Minister Priyank Kharge said action would be taken against anyone found to have assisted prohibited activities inside the prison. He indicated that responsibility could be examined at different levels and that officials found guilty would not be protected.
The investigation is also expected to establish the circumstances surrounding a video linked to Prajwal Revanna that has circulated online. Officials have said that determining who recorded or shared such material would require a separate examination of the available evidence.
The latest probe puts the spotlight back on security arrangements at Parappana Agrahara prison and raises questions over how prohibited electronic devices continue to reach inmates despite the existing safeguards.
