The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has officially dismissed widespread speculation that Team India star batter Rohit Sharma will retire after the third ODI against England at Lord’s on Sunday. BCCI finally Breaks Silence on Rohit Sharma Retirement.
The board clarified that there have been no discussions regarding Rohit’s retirement and reaffirmed that he remains an integral part of the Indian team. The BCCI has confirmed that the third and final ODI against England will not be the last international appearance of the 39-year-old former Indian captain.
Speaking to the media, BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia said, “There has been a lot of speculation in the media about Rohit Sharma’s future. However, I want to state categorically that there has been no discussion whatsoever about Sundayβs match at Lord’s being his final international game.”
The clarification comes amid reports claiming that chief selector Ajit Agarkar and head coach Gautam Gambhir were planning to gradually phase Rohit Sharma out of the ODI squad. The BCCI’s statement has effectively put an end to those rumours.
Saikia added that Rohit remains committed to playing until the 2027 ICC ODI World Cup. However, like any other player, his future selection will depend on his form, fitness, and performance.
The retirement speculation gained momentum after Rohit managed scores of just 11 and 26 in the first two ODIs of the ongoing England series. At the same time, media reports suggested that the selectors were considering giving young opener Yashasvi Jaiswal a long-term opportunity with an eye on the 2027 World Cup, leading to concerns among fans about Rohit’s future.
Rohit had already retired from T20 Internationals after leading India to the 2024 T20 World Cup title and announced his retirement from Test cricket in May 2025. He is currently active only in the ODI format. His recent dip in form further fuelled speculation that he could soon be dropped from the team.
India batting coach Sitanshu Kotak also rejected the retirement rumours, expressing confidence that Rohit Sharma will make a strong comeback in the Lord’s ODI. Overall, the BCCI’s official clarification has put an end to the speculation surrounding Rohit Sharma’s retirement. The board has made it clear that the Lord’s ODI is not his final international match, bringing much-needed relief to millions of “Hitman” fans.
