Jagat Prakash Nadda has been the BJP National President since January 2020. His term was extended to steer the party through the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, and he is now on an extension. The BJP’s constitution requires that state presidents be elected in at least 19 out of its 37 organizational states and Union Territories before the process for electing the national president can begin.

The BJP has been actively completing its organizational elections at the state level. As of early July 2025, new state presidents have been appointed in several states, including Puducherry, Mizoram, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Uttarakhand, Madhya Pradesh, West Bengal, and Odisha.
This is pushing the party closer to fulfilling the required threshold of 19 states. Key states like Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, Karnataka, Haryana, and Delhi are still in the process of electing their state chiefs.
