Statewide Social-Educational Survey Nears Completion, But Bengaluru Lags Behind; CM to Review Progress Today
Statewide Social-Educational Survey: The Karnataka government‘s ambitious statewide social and educational survey has achieved 96.35% household coverage outside the Greater Bengaluru Area (GBA) as of Saturday.
However, within GBA limits, progress remains sluggish at just 39.76%, prompting Chief Minister Siddaramaiah to convene a high-level review meeting this evening at Krishna, his official residence.
The survey, overseen by the Karnataka State Commission for Backward Classes, was initially scheduled to conclude by October 18, but poor progress in urban zones has led to an extension. Officials confirmed that the survey will continue through Sunday, and a decision on further extension—especially in GBA—will be taken during today’s meeting.
Survey Progress Snapshot
Statewide (excluding GBA):
Target households: 1,48,14,286
Surveyed households: 1,42,74,031
Completion rate: 96.35%
Population coverage: 5,29,63,614 individuals (87.32%)
Greater Bengaluru Area (GBA):
Target households: 39,82,335
Surveyed households (as of Saturday): 17,84,312
Completion rate: 39.76%
Saturday’s progress alone: 58,672 households
Challenges and Adjustments:
Initially, surveyors collected data from only 2-3 members per household, often limited to those with Aadhaar cards. Authorities have now instructed teams to conduct follow-up visits to gather complete family data. This has led to a revised strategy and extended timelines, particularly in urban areas where logistical hurdles and population density have slowed progress.
Sources indicate that the survey in GBA may continue until October 24, depending on the outcome of today’s review. The Chief Minister is expected to decide whether to extend the survey or conclude it, based on updated field reports and departmental inputs.
The survey aims to provide a comprehensive socio-educational profile of Karnataka’s population, which will inform future policy decisions, especially concerning reservation, welfare schemes, and resource allocation.
