CID prepares final chargesheet in Chinnaswamy stadium stampede case

Bengaluru: The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has completed preparations for the final chargesheet in the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium stampede case that occurred on June 4, in which 11 people lost their lives. The chargesheet spans 2,200 pages and is expected to be submitted to the court shortly, according to police sources.

CID officials revealed that the investigation found lapses on the part of KSCA (Karnataka State Cricket Association), DNA (E-Event Management), and the RCB franchise. “All three organizations were found responsible during the course of our investigation. Multiple pieces of evidence have been gathered, and everything will be consolidated into the final report for submission to the court,” said a senior police officer.

Eyewitness statements and accounts from the injured were recorded, and CCTV footage was thoroughly examined. Investigators found that poor coordination and mismanagement contributed to the tragedy. Ahead of the Vijayotsava celebrations, proper arrangements were not made, and police were not informed in advance, making it difficult to establish adequate security.

Sources noted that confusion regarding ticketing by RCB was a primary trigger for the stampede. DNA failed to ensure proper security arrangements, and even the private security agency hired for the event was ineffective. There were also lapses in coordination between event organizers and the police.

Following the incident, multiple FIRs were registered at Kabbnpark Police Station, and initially, four people were arrested. Subsequently, the state government handed over both cases to the CID for a detailed investigation.

CID investigators have identified key factors contributing to the stampede, including disorder near the stadium gates, poor deployment of police personnel, and overcrowding. “All these aspects have been documented in the report submitted to the court,” sources said.

The final chargesheet will formally hold the organizations accountable and outline the specific lapses that led to the tragic stampede, bringing the investigation closer to judicial proceedings.
