KKR captain Ajinkya Rahane resigns captaincy before start new season
Ajinkya Rahane: Indian Premier League franchise Kolkata Knight Riders captain Ajinkya Rahane has stepped down from his captaincy of the Mumbai domestic cricket team. KKR captain Ajinkya Rahane resigns captaincy before start new season.
He made the announcement via a social media post, stating that he believes “it’s the right time to groom a new leader” for the team. Rahane’s decision is driven by his desire to nurture the next generation of leadership in Mumbai cricket.

He believes that by stepping down, he can provide an opportunity for a younger player to take on the responsibility. He has clarified that he will continue to play for the Mumbai team as a specialist batter in all formats, and remains committed to helping the team win more trophies.
Under his leadership, Mumbai has had significant success, winning the Ranji Trophy in the 2023-24 seasons and the Irani Cup in the 2024-25 seasons. He also led them to the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy title in the 2022-23 seasons.
With Rahane’s departure from the captaincy, the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) will now have to choose a new captain. Potential candidates include Shreyas Iyer and Suryakumar Yadav, who are experienced leaders in their own right.
For the 2025 IPL season, the Kolkata Knight Riders have appointed Ajinkya Rahane as their captain. This comes after their previous captain, Shreyas Iyer, was released and acquired by the Punjab Kings.
Shreyas Iyer led KKR to their third IPL title in 2024. However, he was later released, leading to the search for a new captain. KKR acquired Rahane at his base price of Rs 1.5 crore, and he has now been entrusted with the leadership role for the 2025 season.
In summary, Ajinkya Rahane is no longer the captain of the Mumbai domestic team, but he is the newly appointed captain of the Kolkata Knight Riders for the upcoming IPL season.
