The Karnataka government has stepped up efforts to identify a suitable location for Bengaluru’s second airport. During a high level meeting, officials reviewed shortlisted sites near Kanakapura Road and the Nelamangala Kunigal Road corridor before moving ahead with the next stage of the project.
The meeting, chaired by Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar, focused on evaluating the feasibility of locations already identified at Chudahalli, Somanahalli and the Nelamangala Kunigal Road region. Officials have been directed to submit a detailed technical feasibility report before a final decision is made.
One of the government’s key priorities is to select a site that requires the least private land acquisition while causing minimal displacement of villages. Authorities have been asked to consider both social and economic impacts before recommending the final location.
According to officials, around 4,655 acres are available in Chudahalli and nearly 4,376 acres in Somanahalli. If both areas are considered together, the total land available exceeds 9,000 acres, making the region a strong contender for the proposed airport.
Environmental concerns also formed an important part of the discussion. Since Somanahalli is located close to Bannerghatta National Park, officials have been instructed to assess the possible impact on wildlife, prepare detailed environmental reports and obtain the required clearances before the project moves forward.
After the meeting, D K Shivakumar said the government had reviewed the progress made so far and directed officials to identify the most suitable location based on land acquisition requirements, village relocation, environmental considerations and technical feasibility.
