Religious tensions spark violent protests in Nepal’s Birgunj; India closes border

New Delhi, : Parts of Nepal bordering India are witnessing heightened communal tensions following a viral social media video that sparked outrage among local communities. In Parsa district, particularly in the city of Birgunj, protests have escalated into violence, prompting authorities to impose curfew to restore order.

The Parsa district administration enforced curfew in Birgunj, close to India’s Bihar-Raxaul border, after demonstrations turned aggressive. Amid the deteriorating security situation, India has temporarily closed all border crossings with Nepal, allowing only emergency services to operate. Regular cross-border movement, including trade and passenger traffic, has been suspended until further notice.

The unrest traces back to a video posted on social media by two Muslim individuals, Haider Ansari and Amanat Ansari, from Kamala Municipality in Dhanusha district. The video reportedly contained statements offensive to certain religious communities, which triggered anger across Dhanusha and Parsa districts, leading to widespread communal agitation.

Local authorities acted swiftly by taking the two men into custody, following community intervention. Despite their arrest, the situation worsened when a mosque in the Kamlada Sakhua Maran area was vandalized, further inflaming communal sentiments. The acts of violence have drawn condemnation from multiple religious groups, particularly Hindu organizations, who have staged demonstrations against what they describe as blasphemy against their deities.

Security forces remain on high alert, patrolling affected areas and attempting to contain further clashes. Authorities have emphasized that maintaining communal harmony is a priority and are urging citizens to avoid provocative actions. The curfew and border closure are intended to prevent the unrest from spreading to other towns along the India-Nepal border.

The situation highlights the sensitive nature of communal relations in the region and the speed at which social media content can escalate into real-world conflict. Nepalese and Indian authorities are monitoring developments closely, coordinating to ensure peace, and exploring measures to resume normal border operations once the security situation stabilizes.
