6.2-magnitude earthquake hits western Japan, no tsunami threat

Tokyo: A strong earthquake measuring 6.2 on the Richter scale struck western Japan on Tuesday morning, causing brief panic among residents but no reports of major damage or casualties.

The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) confirmed that the quake occurred around 10:30 am local time (01:18 GMT), with its epicentre located in the eastern part of Shimane Prefecture, in the Chugoku region.

Authorities were quick to clarify that there was no tsunami threat following the earthquake, easing fears along the coastal areas. The JMA stated that although the tremor was widely felt across parts of western Japan, sea-level changes that could lead to a tsunami were not expected.

Significantly, the epicentre of the earthquake lies close to critical infrastructure, including the Shimane Nuclear Power Station, which is located about 32 kilometres from the affected area. Japan’s Nuclear Regulation Authority said there were no abnormalities or safety concerns reported at the nuclear facility, and operations remained unaffected.

Soon after the main quake, a series of aftershocks were recorded across the region. In Yasugi city, another tremor measuring 5 on the Shindo seismic intensity scale was felt. This was followed by smaller earthquakes of magnitudes 4.5, 5.1, 3.8 and 5.4 in nearby areas. Officials reiterated that none of these tremors posed a tsunami risk.

The United States Geological Survey (USGS), meanwhile, measured the earthquake slightly lower, estimating its magnitude at 5.8. Despite the difference in readings, experts agreed that the quake was moderate to strong in intensity.

Japan is one of the most earthquake-prone countries in the world, as it lies along the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” where four major tectonic plates meet. With a population of around 125 million, the country experiences nearly 1,500 earthquakes every year, making seismic activity a regular part of life.

Emergency services remain on alert, while authorities continue to monitor aftershocks and assess any potential impact.
