PM Modi condoles Hassan Tragedy and announced financial assistance

PM Modi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed his profound grief over the tragic truck accident that occurred during a Ganesh procession in the Hassan district of Karnataka. The Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) released a statement on X, where he called the incident “heart-rending.”

In addition to his condolences, Prime Minister Modi has announced financial assistance for the victims and their families from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund (PMNRF). An ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh will be provided to the next of kin of each person who died in the accident. The injured will receive Rs 50,000 each.

This announcement comes alongside the compensation declared by the Karnataka state government, which has announced a compensation of Rs 5 lakh for the families of the deceased and has promised to cover the medical expenses of the injured.

A tragic incident has occurred in the Hassan district of Karnataka, where a truck ploughed into a Ganesh immersion procession, resulting in multiple fatalities and injuries.

The accident took place on Friday, September 12, 2025, in Mosale Hosahalli village on National Highway-373. According to police and eyewitnesses, a truck driver, identified as Bhuvanesh, swerved to avoid hitting a biker. The truck then lost control, jumped the median, and crashed into a crowd of devotees on the other side of the road who were participating in a Ganesh procession.

At least eight to nine people have been confirmed dead, and over 20 others were injured. The victims were largely young men, including three engineering students. The driver was injured and apprehended by the crowd before being taken into police custody.

Political leaders, including Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, expressed their condolences and announced compensation for the victims’ families. The state government has pledged Rs 5 lakh to the families of the deceased and will cover the medical expenses of the injured.

The Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund (PMNRF) will also provide an additional Rs 2 lakh to the next of kin of the deceased and Rs 50,000 to the injured.

Authorities have registered a case and are investigating the incident. There are also claims from local politicians and villagers that the tragedy was a result of police negligence in managing the traffic and the procession.
