Bengaluru: The Congress party in Karnataka is witnessing escalating tensions over succession politics, with the issue now reaching a critical stage.
State party president D.K. Shivakumar (DKS) has reportedly given a subtle disciplinary reminder to Yathindra Siddaramaiah, son of Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, after the latter’s remarks about future leadership in the party sparked internal debate.
By reaffirming that he stands by party discipline, Shivakumar appears to have made his move in the growing political chess game within the Congress. Whether formal disciplinary action will follow or the issue will be managed through strategic restraint remains to be seen.
The controversy began when Yathindra hinted that Minister Satish Jarkiholi would make a capable leader to succeed his father, triggering varied interpretations within party ranks. Supporters of Shivakumar, including legislators Shivaganga and Iqbal Hussain, questioned why Yathindra should be exempt from disciplinary limits. Their public remarks have intensified the friction between the Siddaramaiah and DKS camps. Meanwhile, several pro-Shivakumar MLAs have demanded disciplinary action against Yathindra — a move that DKS has indirectly backed, reiterating that party discipline is his top priority.
The Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) has reportedly forwarded a detailed report on Yathindra’s statement to the party’s high command in New Delhi. Sources indicate that the report outlines the internal reactions and the urgency to contain further intra-party divisions. Despite the controversy, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has remained silent on the matter, maintaining distance from the ongoing factional skirmish.
Adding to the debate, Minister Priyank Kharge defended Yathindra’s comment, clarifying that leadership decisions ultimately rest with the Congress high command. Meanwhile, Legislative Council member Rajendra Rajanna described Yathindra’s opinion as personal, asserting that he sees nothing wrong in suggesting that an AHINDA leader could become the next Chief Minister.
Political observers suggest that post-Bihar elections, leadership shifts within Karnataka’s Congress unit may become clearer.
