Recent news suggests that the party high command is considering various options for the Karnataka unit, with Union Minister V Somanna’s name also surfacing as a possible replacement for Vijayendra, though this has faced opposition.

While Sunil Kumar was previously in contention for the state president’s post and was appointed as a state general secretary in December 2023, and now there some current predictions or reports indicating that he is the next Karnataka BJP state president.

Vijayendra officially holds the post, having taken charge in December 2023. His three-year term is not yet complete. The BJP has recently appointed new state chiefs in several other states, but the decision on Karnataka, along with Uttar Pradesh and Gujarat, is still pending. This delay is fueling the speculation.

There are reports of growing dissent within the state unit, with a faction of disgruntled leaders pushing for his removal. Some have openly campaigned against his leadership. Senior party functionaries indicate that the central high command is considering other options due to pressure from “multiple camps” and difficulty in finding a name with “unanimous backing.”

The election of a new national BJP president is contingent on the completion of organizational elections in at least 19 states. Karnataka is a key state where this process is yet to be finalized. Vijayendra himself has expressed confidence in retaining his post, highlighting his performance and the agitations organized against the current Congress government in Karnataka. He believes the high command appreciates his efforts.
