Speaking to Prime Minister Narendra Modi through a video call from his hospital bed, Smith became emotional as he recalled the terrifying incident. He said, “Whenever I face difficulties and pain, I recite the Hanuman Chalisa. Even during those blood-soaked moments, I was chanting the Hanuman Chalisa.”
Describing his conversation with Prime Minister Modi as one of the proudest moments of his life, Smith said that his faith, values, and cultural upbringing gave him the mental strength to fight through the life-and-death situation. “I may be away from my country, but I am never away from my values and traditions,” Smith said.
“I Thought I Would Not Survive”: Captain Smith, Recalling the horrifying moments, Captain Smith said, “At that moment, I thought about my life. I felt that I would not survive. But protecting the passengers on the aircraft was also my responsibility.”
“After falling down, I somehow regained control within 5 to 10 seconds and managed to unlock the cockpit door. Every person on the aircraft played a role in this rescue operation. I received excellent medical treatment and care in Saudi Arabia,” he said.
Smith added, “Whenever I felt pain, I used to recite the Hanuman Chalisa. That positive energy helped me survive. I never imagined that the Prime Minister of my country would personally call and speak with me.”

During the life-and-death struggle, Captain Smith prioritised the safety of hundreds of unknown passengers over his own life. His actions have been described as a powerful example of Indian values and selfless service.

Recalling Smith’s mother Geeta Ben, PM Modi said that she had raised him with the principles of the Bhagavad Gita and strong moral values. “The noble values given by your mother are the reason you were able to save hundreds of lives today,” Modi said.
