Bengaluru : Amid ongoing debates within the Karnataka Congress over power sharing and leadership transition, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has issued a clarification regarding his son Yathindra Siddaramaiah’s recent statement that stirred political controversy across the state.
Yathindra had said that his father would not contest the 2028 elections and that Minister Satish Jarkiholi was capable of filling the Chief Minister’s position and should be given the opportunity to lead. The remarks triggered intense political discussion, prompting the Congress high command to take note and issue a notice to Yathindra.
Breaking his silence, CM Siddaramaiah told reporters that his son’s comments had been misinterpreted. “I spoke to Yathindra about his statement. He told me he did not say that Satish Jarkiholi should become Chief Minister. He only made a theoretical observation. The statement was twisted and reported out of context,” Siddaramaiah clarified.
“I directly asked Yathindra about it”
The Chief Minister explained that he personally questioned Yathindra on his remarks. “I asked him what exactly he had said. He told me, ‘I only spoke theoretically, not specifically about anyone becoming CM.’ Some have distorted his words. He never said that Satish Jarkiholi must be the next Chief Minister,” Siddaramaiah said.
He further downplayed the controversy, remarking, “Someone must have asked him, just like you are asking me now. He answered a question from the media—that’s all. I was speaking about the Cooperation Week program, and you asked me about Yathindra, just like they must have done there.”
Congress leadership speculation intensifies
The latest remarks come amid persistent speculation about leadership changes in Karnataka Congress. While Siddaramaiah has often said he will complete his full term, discussions about succession have been recurrent within the party, especially after senior leaders like Satish Jarkiholi and D.K. Shivakumar emerged as potential future contenders.
The Congress high command, which has intervened multiple times in the past to quell factional talk, is once again expected to monitor the situation closely to prevent internal discord ahead of key electoral phases.
Siddaramaiah on All India Cooperative Week
During the same interaction, Siddaramaiah also briefed the media on the upcoming 72nd All India Cooperative Week celebrations. He said the event will last seven days, with a preparatory meeting already held. “The inauguration will take place on Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru’s birth anniversary. The event will be celebrated at Bengaluru’s Palace Grounds at 12 noon. As the Chief Minister and Cooperation Minister, I will inaugurate the program myself,” Siddaramaiah said.
While the CM sought to downplay his son’s controversial comment, political observers believe Yathindra’s statement has once again reignited debates over the Congress’s post-Siddaramaiah leadership, highlighting underlying tensions within the ruling party.
