Hyderabad : In a shocking incident, a woman allegedly suffocated her 14-month-old daughter to death following a quarrel with her husband over buying clothes for the upcoming Ramzan festival. The tragic incident took place in the Golconda area of Hyderabad, police said.

According to police, the accused woman, identified as Gausia Begum, was living with her husband Ameer Ali, an auto driver, and her in-laws in the Risala Bazaar locality. The couple had married against the wishes of Gausia’s parents, and their daughter, Umme Aiman, was born about 14 months ago.

Police said the incident occurred on Sunday after a heated argument between the couple regarding buying new clothes for the Ramzan festival. During the altercation, Ameer Ali reportedly refused to buy clothes, which led to a quarrel between the two. After the argument escalated, the husband allegedly left the house in anger.

Investigators said that soon after her husband stepped out, Gausia Begum allegedly suffocated the child by pressing a pillow against the toddler’s face. The baby reportedly died on the spot due to suffocation.

After the incident, the woman allegedly tried to mislead her family members by claiming that the child was missing. However, family members later found the baby lying inside the room. The child was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared her dead on arrival.

Confirming the incident, Syed Faiz, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) of Golconda, said the accused woman later surrendered at the Golconda police station. “The woman confessed that she had suffocated the child. Initially she tried to claim that the baby had gone missing, but the family soon discovered the child in the room,” the officer said.

During questioning, Gausia Begum reportedly told police that she was distressed due to alleged harassment and disputes within the family, including frequent quarrels with her husband and in-laws.

Police have taken the woman into custody and registered a case. Further investigation is underway to ascertain the exact sequence of events and the circumstances that led to the child’s death.

The incident has shocked residents of the locality, raising concerns about domestic disputes escalating into tragic consequences.
