Kerala Wayanad Landslide: Even before the scars of the devastating Chooralmala landslide could heal, another major landslide has devastated Kerala’s Wayanad district. Continuous heavy rainfall triggered a massive landslide near the tunnel construction site in the Meppadi region, killing two workers. Kerala Wayanad Landslide: Two Dead, over 30 Missing.
The incident occurred near the Meenakshi Bridge, where work on the Wayanad tunnel project was underway. The landslide is believed to have buried around 20 workers under tonnes of debris, while more than 30 people are reported missing. Hundreds of vehicles have also been trapped beneath the mud, raising fears that the death toll could rise further.
Rescue teams, assisted by local residents, have so far pulled six people to safety. The injured have been admitted to Dr. Moopen’s Medical College Hospital in Meppadi. They have been identified as Heera Suresh, Dileep, Suraj, Sanjay Thapur, Rajneesh, and Tanmay Ghosh. One of the injured is reported to be in critical condition.
Government Orders Emergency Response, Road Closed:
Taking note of the seriousness of the situation, Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan has directed two ministers to oversee the rescue operations and visit the accident site immediately.
The region received a record 26 cm of rainfall in the last 24 hours, leading authorities to completely shut down the road connecting to Chooralmala as a precautionary measure.
Although tunnel construction work had already been suspended since yesterday due to continuous heavy rain, the catastrophic landslide could not be prevented. Rescue operations are ongoing as authorities race against time to locate those still missing.
