OPPO is reportedly exploring a different approach to front camera design for its upcoming Reno 18 series. Instead of relying only on higher megapixel counts, the company could introduce a 68MP sensor with a square 1:1 format.

The information comes from tipster Digital Chat Station, who has reportedly mentioned a new 68MP 1:1 front camera sensor being developed by OPPO. The exact smartphone that will use it has not been confirmed, although the Reno 18 series is being considered as one possible candidate.

A square camera sensor could offer an interesting advantage for smartphone users. Traditional front camera sensors are generally rectangular, while a 1:1 sensor is closer to a square shape. This design could give the camera system greater flexibility when capturing images and videos in different orientations.

The technology may be particularly useful for people who frequently create social media content. Better framing could make it easier to capture selfies, short videos and other content without constantly adjusting the phone’s position.

There is still considerable uncertainty around the reported specification. OPPO has not officially announced the Reno 18 series or confirmed that a 68MP square selfie camera will be part of the lineup.

The Reno 18 series is currently expected to arrive around May 2027, according to the available reports. With the launch still some time away, the camera specifications and other hardware details could change before the final products are announced.

OPPO is also reportedly exploring similar camera technology for its premium smartphones. Earlier reports have suggested that the company could consider a 100MP 1:1 front camera for the Find X10 Ultra, which is expected to arrive during the first half of 2027.

If the 68MP 1:1 sensor does make its way into the Reno 18 series, it could give OPPO a distinctive camera feature in an increasingly competitive smartphone market. For now, however, the information should be treated as a leak rather than a confirmed specification.
