After years of struggling to support her family through domestic work, Kalita Majhi has achieved political success, earning a ministerial position in West Bengal’s newly formed government.
In a remarkable turnaround of fortunes, Kalita Majhi has gone from working in households as a domestic helper to becoming a minister in the West Bengal government. The BJP leader, who recently won an Assembly seat, was sworn in as a Minister of State on Monday.
Majhi’s rise has attracted attention because of the challenges she faced before entering public life. Financial constraints forced her to leave her studies midway, and she spent several years working in different homes to help her family make ends meet. During that period, her monthly earnings were limited, but she continued to work hard despite the difficulties.
Her entry into politics began at the grassroots level. Starting as a booth level worker, Majhi gradually strengthened her presence within the BJP. Though she faced disappointment in the 2021 Assembly elections after losing from the Ausgram constituency, she did not step away from politics.
Her persistence eventually paid off. The BJP fielded her again in the 2026 Assembly elections, and this time she secured a victory. Following the election, she was selected for a ministerial role in the government headed by Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari.
Reacting to her appointment, Majhi said the development was beyond anything she had expected. She noted that becoming an MLA itself felt like a dream come true, while receiving a ministerial berth was something she had never imagined during her early years of struggle.
The newly appointed minister has been associated with the BJP since 2014. She stated that while her responsibilities as an MLA were focused on her constituency, her current role requires her to contribute to the progress of the entire state.
Majhi’s family background remains modest. Her husband earns a living as a plumber, and their son is a school student. Her story is being celebrated as a powerful example of determination, showing how dedication and perseverance can lead to extraordinary achievements in public life.
Her appointment represents not only personal success but also a symbol of social mobility, highlighting how individuals from humble backgrounds can rise to positions of leadership through commitment and hard work.
