Gujarat High Court Upholds Death Penalty for 38 Convicts in Ahmedabad Serial Blasts Case

The Gujarat High Court upheld the death penalty for 38 convicts and life imprisonment for 11 others in the Ahmedabad serial blasts case while ordering compensation for victims families.

In a landmark judgment, the Gujarat High Court has upheld the death sentences awarded to 38 convicts in the 2008 Ahmedabad serial blasts case. The court also confirmed the life imprisonment of 11 other convicts, while directing the Gujarat government to provide Rs 10 lakh as compensation to the family of each victim who lost their life in the attacks. The court further instructed the state to extend suitable financial assistance to those who suffered serious injuries.

The verdict comes after a detailed review of appeals filed against the 2022 judgment of the special trial court, which had convicted 49 people in the case. After examining digital evidence, forensic reports, witness testimonies, and call data records, the High Court concluded that the trial court’s findings were legally sound and required no change.

The Ahmedabad serial blasts took place on July 26, 2008, when 21 bombs exploded across the city within about 70 minutes. The coordinated attacks targeted crowded public places, including markets, bus stands, and even the Civil Hospital, where injured victims were being treated. The blasts claimed the lives of 56 people and left more than 200 others injured.

Investigators found that members linked to the banned Students Islamic Movement of India and the Indian Mujahideen were responsible for carrying out the attacks. According to the prosecution, the bombings were planned as retaliation for the 2002 Gujarat riots. Gujarat Police and Special Investigation Team officers conducted an extensive nationwide investigation to uncover the larger terror network involved in the conspiracy.

The trial in the case lasted nearly 14 years and involved testimony from more than 1,100 witnesses before the special court delivered its verdict in 2022. The confirmation of the punishment by the Gujarat High Court makes it one of the most significant rulings in India’s judicial history involving a terrorism case, particularly because of the large number of death sentences upheld in a single case.

While the High Court has now affirmed the sentences, the legal process is not yet over. The convicted individuals still have the option of challenging the judgment before the Supreme Court, making the next stage of the case closely watched. Meanwhile, the High Court’s direction to compensate victims’ families reflects its emphasis on delivering justice not only through punishment but also through support for those who suffered the devastating consequences of the terror attacks.
