In Singapore, cases have increased by almost 30 percent in a week. There are also reports of significant increases in China and Thailand. Hong Kong reported 1,042 cases in the week ending May 10. In the previous week, the number of cases was 972.

The surge in infections has continued since early March, with 33 cases being recorded per week, according to the Hong Kong government. The ever-increasing positivity rate is still a major concern. The positivity rate, which was 0.31 per cent in the week ending March 1, increased to 5.09 per cent in the week ending April 5 and reached 13.66 per cent in the week ending May 10.
Hong Kong has recorded nearly 50 severe Covid-19 cases, including deaths, in the past fortnight. A new COVID-19 variant, JN.1, is causing a new wave of infections across Asia, raising concerns among health experts and governments.
As a subtype of Omicron, JN.1 is known for spreading quickly, especially in densely populated areas. As cases continue to rise, authorities are closely monitoring the impact and urging precautions.

Symptoms of COVID-19 JN.1 variant: Symptoms are similar to previous COVID-19 variants. Typically, they include fever, dry cough, fatigue, sore throat, nasal congestion, and occasional shortness of breath. Many people experience mild illness, especially if they have been vaccinated.

Causes of COVID-19 surge: Its high transmissibility is linked to changes in the spike protein, which makes it easier to infect others. Indoor gatherings, international travel, and reduced public health measures are also contributing to the spread of the variant.
