Air Traveller Alert: How much alcohol is allowed to carry on flight in India
Air Traveller Alert: Specific rules governing the carriage of alcohol on domestic flights have been established by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) and Indian airlines, allowing passengers to carry up to five liters of alcohol in checked baggage under specified conditions.
These rules address the growing passenger inquiries regarding the carriage of regional liquor, craft beers and local wines during domestic travel across India. Indian travellers often try to carry alcoholic beverages during domestic flights, especially when visiting destinations known for their local specialties.

Indian travellers often try to carry alcoholic beverages during domestic flights, especially when visiting destinations known for their local specialties. The rise of the holiday season has prompted airline officials to clarify transportation guidelines for various alcoholic beverages.
Airlines allow passengers to carry up to 5 liters of alcoholic beverages in checked baggage, but the alcohol content is between 24% and 70% by volume. DGCA strictly prohibits beverages with alcohol content exceeding 70% from all domestic flights.
Passengers must ensure that all alcoholic beverages remain in their original, unopened retail packaging throughout the journey. Airlines mandate secure packaging to prevent bottle breakage or liquid spillage during baggage handling.

Travellers must wrap bottles adequately using bubble wrap or place them between soft clothing items within checked luggage. Opened or partially consumed bottles face automatic rejection under current aviation regulations.
Low-Alcohol Beverages
Alcoholic beverages with an alcohol content of 24% or less, including most beers and wines, operate under separate guidelines. These beverages have no specific quantity limits in checked baggage, which gives travellers more flexibility when carrying wine collections or craft beer selections.
The relaxed restrictions reflect the reduced safety risk associated with low-alcohol content beverages. Airlines generally prohibit the transport of alcohol in cabin baggage, with specific exceptions for duty-free purchases.
Passengers can carry alcohol purchased from airport security hold areas or duty-free shops in cabin baggage. These purchases must be in transparent, re-sealable plastic bags, specifically security tamper evident bags, with a maximum capacity of one liter.
Airlines Vistara (UK) and SpiceJet (SG) allow the carriage of carry-on alcohol if passengers comply with packaging requirements and purchase verification standards. Other Indian carriers maintain similar policies, reserving discretion over the acceptance of alcohol.
State-Level Alcohol Laws:
Travellers should research the destination state’s alcohol laws before carrying beverages on domestic flights. Several Indian states maintain dry laws or impose restrictions on the possession of alcohol, which affects the legal transportation and possession of alcohol upon arrival. These state-specific regulations operate independently of air transportation regulations.
