Air India flight skids off runway during landing
Air India flight: An Air India flight (AI2744) from Kochi skidded off the runway during landing at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) in Mumbai today, Monday, July 21, 2025.
The Airbus A320 aircraft experienced a “runway excursion” shortly after touchdown on Runway 27, the airport’s primary runway. This means it veered off the paved surface of the runway, going into an unpaved area and then onto an adjacent taxiway before coming to a halt.

The incident occurred amidst heavy rainfall in Mumbai, leading to slippery runway conditions. Fortunately, all passengers and crew are safe and have disembarked without any reported injuries. While the aircraft managed to taxi safely to a parking bay, it sustained some damage.
Reports indicate that three tires burst during the excursion and there was damage to one of the engine cowlings. The aircraft has been grounded for detailed checks. The primary runway (09/27) sustained minor damage and was temporarily shut down for assessment and clearing operations.
To ensure continuity of flight operations, the secondary runway (14/32) has been activated. A team from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) is at the airport to investigate the matter. This incident highlights the challenges of operating flights during the heavy monsoon season in Mumbai.
