Fast-track court to be set up in Inaan Veerapur honour killing case: CM Siddaramaiah
Bengaluru: Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has said that ensuring speedy justice to the victim’s family is the government’s top priority in the honour killing case of a young woman named Manya from Inaan Veerapur village in Hubballi taluk.
He announced that the state government will take steps to constitute a fast-track court to ensure a time-bound trial in the case. Speaking on the matter, the Chief Minister said the incident has been registered as a case of atrocity and murder involving atrocities against Dalits.
As per legal provisions under the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, the charge sheet must be filed within 60 days. To ensure effective prosecution and avoid procedural delays, the government has decided to appoint a special public prosecutor, he said.
The case has sparked widespread outrage across the state, with several organisations and community groups demanding strict action against those responsible. In a related development, Lingayat organisations in Gadag observed a “day of atonement” in response to the honour killing of Manya Patil, condemning the incident and calling for social reform.
CM Siddaramaiah strongly condemned honour killings and other forms of caste-based violence, stating that forcing a woman into marriage against her will, opposing her choice of partner, or subjecting her to violence in the name of caste or so-called honour are “heinous acts that shame the entire human society.”
He made it clear that the government would not tolerate such crimes under any circumstances. The Chief Minister also announced the government’s intention to bring in a special law to curb honour killings, caste-based violence, and related crimes.
“With the objective of preventing such incidents in the future and creating greater awareness about the law among the public, a special legislation will be formulated,” he said.
He added that the issue would be taken up for detailed discussion in the upcoming session of the state legislature, following which an appropriate decision would be taken. The proposed law is expected to strengthen legal safeguards, enhance accountability, and act as a deterrent against crimes committed in the name of social norms and caste hierarchy.
The government’s announcement has been welcomed by civil rights groups, who have long been demanding stronger legal measures and faster trials in cases of honour killings and atrocities against marginalised communities.
