Chakravarthy Chandrachud’s “condom supply” remark sparks major row in Sandalwood
Bengaluru: A controversial statement made by actor and director Chakravarthy Chandrachud has triggered a major uproar in the Kannada film industry. His remark that “some producers supply condoms to heroes” has created outrage among members of Sandalwood, leading to strong reactions from the Kannada Film Producers Association.
The statement was made by Chandrachud during an interview on a YouTube channel. As soon as the clip went viral, it created a storm on social media and within the film fraternity. Several producers expressed anger, stating that such comments were insulting and damaging to the reputation of the Kannada film industry.
Following the controversy, the Kannada Film Producers Association convened an emergency meeting to discuss the issue. During the meeting, office bearers and members unanimously decided to take strict action against Chandrachud for his remarks. The association alleged that his comments were irresponsible and had hurt the sentiments of producers.
As part of their decision, the Producers Association filed a formal complaint against Chandrachud at the High Grounds Police Station in Bengaluru. In their complaint, they accused him of making baseless and defamatory statements that created confusion and unnecessary anxiety within the industry.
The association stated that such allegations tarnish the image of film producers and the Kannada cinema sector as a whole. “Chandrachud has made absurd and misleading statements without any evidence. This has caused embarrassment and unrest among producers,” the association said in its official statement.
Facing severe backlash, Chakravarthy Chandrachud later issued a clarification regarding his remarks. He claimed that his comments were misunderstood and taken out of context. According to him, he was referring to the working culture and politics in the Tamil film industry and not to Kannada cinema.
“I was speaking about the Tamil film industry and the environment there. My statements were not about Kannada producers or the Kannada film industry at all. I used the phrase ‘commode to condom’ only as a metaphor and not to target any individual producer,” Chandrachud explained.
He further added that he had worked in the Tamil film industry as well and was describing the hero-centric culture that exists there. “I spoke based on my personal experience about how the system functions in Tamil cinema. Unfortunately, only a small portion of my interview was edited and circulated, which created this misunderstanding,” he said.
Chandrachud also stated that he had raised his voice about how a Kannada producer had become a victim of Tamil film politics. He insisted that there was no intention to insult or hurt Kannada producers in any way.
Despite his clarification, the Kannada Film Producers Association has decided to pursue the complaint and seek appropriate legal action. The controversy has once again highlighted the growing sensitivity within the film industry over public statements and social media discussions.
