Heavy Rain Disrupts Bengaluru as Seven Karnataka Districts Brace for Intense Showers

Heavy rainfall brought normal life to a crawl across Bengaluru after sudden showers lashed several parts of the city, creating severe traffic congestion and disrupting evening travel. As commuters struggled to reach their destinations, the India Meteorological Department issued a fresh alert predicting heavy rainfall in seven districts of Karnataka over the next day. The warning has prompted authorities to advise residents to remain cautious as the active monsoon continues to influence weather conditions across the state.

The weather department has forecast heavy rainfall for Shivamogga, Chikkamagaluru, Kodagu, Udupi, Uttara Kannada, Dakshina Kannada and Hassan districts. These regions are expected to receive widespread rain under the influence of an active monsoon system. Officials have urged people living in vulnerable areas to stay informed through official weather updates and avoid unnecessary travel during periods of intense rainfall.

Apart from the districts under the heavy rainfall alert, moderate showers are also likely in Bengaluru Urban, Bengaluru Rural, Chamarajanagar, Chikkaballapur, Chitradurga, Davanagere, Kolar, Mandya, Mysuru, Ramanagara, Ballari and Vijayanagara districts. The weather department said rainfall intensity may vary across locations, but scattered showers are expected to continue in many parts of Karnataka.

The sudden downpour in Bengaluru caught many commuters by surprise during busy traffic hours. Major roads quickly became congested as rain slowed vehicle movement across the city. Several prominent areas including KR Market, Town Hall, KR Circle, Vidhana Soudha, MG Road and Shantinagar witnessed heavy rainfall, leading to long queues of vehicles stretching for several kilometres.

Motorists faced extended delays as water accumulated on roads and traffic movement slowed significantly. Office workers, students and public transport users experienced long travel times while several intersections remained heavily congested for hours. Many commuters described the evening journey as one of the most difficult in recent weeks because of the unexpected weather.

One of the most concerning incidents occurred near KR Market where an ambulance became trapped in the traffic gridlock. The situation highlighted the difficulties emergency services often face when sudden rain overwhelms Bengaluru’s road network. The incident also renewed discussions about improving traffic management and ensuring emergency vehicles receive priority passage during such situations.

The rainfall once again exposed the city’s recurring monsoon challenges. Bengaluru frequently experiences heavy traffic congestion whenever intense showers occur, particularly in central business districts and major commercial corridors. Waterlogging at key junctions, slow drainage and increasing vehicle numbers continue to make commuting difficult during the rainy season.

While Bengaluru struggled with traffic disruption, coastal and Malnad regions recorded some of the highest rainfall totals in the state. According to data released by the weather department, Hakladi in Kundapura taluk of Udupi district received an impressive 189 millimetres of rainfall in a single day. The figure was among the highest rainfall measurements reported during the latest spell of monsoon activity.

Other parts of Karnataka also recorded substantial rainfall. Parwad in Khanapur taluk of Belagavi district registered 174 millimetres of rain, while Agumbe in Thirthahalli received 170 millimetres. Shirthadi near Mangaluru recorded 133.5 millimetres and Doddmane in Siddapur taluk of Uttara Kannada measured 124.5 millimetres. These figures reflect the widespread intensity of the current monsoon across different regions of the state.

Weather experts believe the present rainfall pattern is the result of strong monsoon winds carrying abundant moisture from the Arabian Sea into Karnataka. These conditions are expected to persist over the next several days, increasing the likelihood of repeated spells of rain in both coastal and interior districts. Authorities are closely monitoring weather developments and remain prepared for any weather related emergencies.

Residents in districts expected to receive heavy rain have been advised to remain alert, particularly those living in low lying areas or locations prone to water accumulation. People have also been encouraged to avoid crossing flooded roads, monitor official weather bulletins and plan travel carefully during periods of intense rainfall.

Motorists travelling through Bengaluru have been advised to allow extra time for their journeys as intermittent showers may continue to affect traffic flow. Drivers have also been asked to exercise caution on slippery roads and maintain safe distances between vehicles to reduce the risk of accidents during wet weather conditions.
