Young lovers die by suicide in Chamarajanagar over parental opposition

Chamarajanagar : In a tragic incident, a young couple ended their lives after allegedly facing opposition from their families over their relationship. The incident took place in Ponnachi village of Hanur taluk in Chamarajanagar district, leaving the local community in shock.

The deceased have been identified as Nadiya (19) and Nagendra (21), who were reportedly in love for some time. According to police sources, the couple had recently left their homes, fearing resistance from their families regarding their marriage.

Nagendra, a resident of the region, had taken Nadiya to his ancestral village in Ponnachi three days ago. Meanwhile, Nadiya’s family, unable to trace her whereabouts, grew increasingly worried and filed a missing complaint at the Male Mahadeshwara Hills Police Station.

Police said that the couple became aware of the missing case filed by the girl’s family. Fearing legal consequences and possible separation, they reportedly panicked. “They were worried about what would happen if they were traced by police or brought back home. It appears that fear and emotional distress drove them to take the extreme step,” a police officer said.

On Thursday, when no one was present at the house, the couple allegedly hanged themselves. The incident came to light when locals noticed unusual activity and informed the authorities.

Police rushed to the spot and conducted a preliminary inspection. The bodies were later shifted to a government hospital for post-mortem examination. A case has been registered, and further investigation is underway.

The incident has once again highlighted the emotional turmoil faced by young couples when confronted with familial opposition, especially in rural areas. Locals expressed grief over the loss of two young lives, stating that timely intervention or counselling could have possibly prevented the tragedy.

Authorities have urged families to approach such sensitive issues with understanding and communication, rather than confrontation, to avoid such heartbreaking incidents in the future.
