Three pilgrims killed as private sleeper bus runs over devotees near Koppal
In a tragic incident, three devotees on a pilgrimage to the Huligemma temple were killed when a private sleeper coach bus ran over them on National Highway-50 near Kukanapalli village in Koppal district.
The deceased have been identified as Annapurna (40), Prakash (25), and Sharanappa (19), all residents of Tallihaal village in Ron taluk of Gadag district. They were on foot, heading to the Huligemma temple in Huligi village when the accident occurred.
According to police sources, the private sleeper coach bus was traveling from Sindagi to Bengaluru when the driver lost control, veering off the road and crashing into the group of devotees. The impact was severe, killing three devotees instantly. Four others sustained serious injuries and have been admitted to the Koppal District Hospital for treatment.
Eyewitnesses said the devotees were only about three hours away from reaching the temple when the bus hit them. The horrifying accident has shocked the local community and cast a pall of grief over the area.
Koppal Superintendent of Police Dr. Ram Arasiddi visited the spot and inspected the scene. A case has been registered at Munirabad Police Station, and further investigation is underway to determine the cause of the accident and possible negligence by the bus driver.
The victims were reportedly part of a larger group of pilgrims walking toward Huligi, a well-known spiritual destination in the region. Authorities have urged bus operators to exercise caution, especially along stretches of highway frequented by pilgrims during the temple festival season.
