Deadly attack on BJP MP Khagen Murmu in Jalpaiguri: Amit Malviya blames TMC for violence
Jalpaiguri, (West Bengal) In a shocking incident, BJP MP Khagen Murmu was fatally attacked in Jalpaiguri on Monday while participating in relief operations in the flood-affected areas of North Bengal. The BJP has alleged that TMC workers were behind the brutal assault, which also left several vehicles damaged.
According to reports, Murmu a two-time MP from North Malda and a prominent tribal leader — was visiting Nagarakata in the Duars region to assist in relief and rescue efforts following devastating floods and landslides. During the visit, a mob allegedly linked to the Trinamool Congress (TMC) attacked his convoy.
Amit Malviya slams Mamata Banerjee:
Reacting to the attack, BJP’s IT cell head Amit Malviya accused the ruling TMC of creating “Jungle Raj” in Bengal. Posting on X, he wrote, “TMC’s Jungle Raj in Bengal! When Mamata Banerjee was dancing at the Kolkata carnival, her party and the state administration were missing from flood-hit North Bengal.
Those who were actually helping the people — BJP leaders and workers — are being attacked. This is TMC’s Bengal, where cruelty thrives and compassion is punished.”
Shubhendu Adhikari hits out at CM:
Leader of Opposition Shubhendu Adhikari also lashed out at the Chief Minister, alleging that the TMC government was “in panic mode” after public outrage over Mamata Banerjee’s carnival appearance.
“She realized too late that people despised her insensitivity while North Bengal mourned deaths and devastation. Instead of helping, the TMC has now unleashed its goons to stop BJP MPs and MLAs from participating in relief work,” Adhikari wrote.
He added that Murmu sustained serious injuries during the attack in Nagarakata, where he was accompanied by Bengal BJP president Samik Bhattacharya. “Even MLA Dr. Shankar Ghosh’s vehicle was attacked in police presence.
Mamata Banerjee cannot intimidate the BJP,” he declared. Adhikari tagged the Prime Minister’s Office, Home Ministry, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, Bengal Governor C.V. Anand Bose, and the National Commission for Scheduled Tribes, demanding immediate action.
State BJP leadership condemns attack:
West Bengal BJP president Samik Bhattacharya confirmed the attack, writing, “MP Khagen Murmu was attacked by Trinamool miscreants in Nagarakata. In this state, law has collapsed, and anarchy rules. Even after the widespread destruction in North Bengal, the Chief Minister continues to celebrate.”
The incident has triggered strong political outrage, with the BJP demanding accountability from the state government and protection for its leaders engaged in relief work. Police have yet to release an official statement on arrests or the current status of the investigation.
