Professor arrested for proposing to student in classroom, incident sparks outrage

Bengaluru : A shocking incident at a reputed medical college in T. Begur of Bengaluru Rural district has led to the arrest of a professor after he allegedly proposed to a female student during a live class. The accused, Dr Abdul Rehman Shariff, was taken into custody by Nelamangala Rural Police Station following a complaint filed by the student.
The incident reportedly took place on March 23 at Siddhartha Medical Sciences and Research Centre. According to police, the professor allegedly offered a chocolate to the student and expressed his feelings in front of the class. The unexpected act left the student shocked and angry.
The situation escalated when the student questioned the professor in the classroom itself. It is alleged that the professor further claimed he had earlier proposed to her and mentioned CCTV footage as proof. This remark reportedly angered the student, who demanded that the footage be shown immediately.
Eyewitnesses said the professor left the classroom stating he would address the issue later. However, the incident triggered outrage among students. The victim and her classmates confronted the professor within the campus premises.
In a dramatic turn of events, the student allegedly assaulted the professor with her footwear, while other students also joined in and attacked him. Videos of the incident have since gone viral on social media, drawing widespread attention and sparking debates over safety and professional conduct in educational institutions.
Students reportedly questioned the professor’s behaviour, accusing him of disrespecting women. Following the assault, the professor fled the spot, and tension prevailed on the campus for some time.
Police officials reached the college soon after receiving information about the incident and conducted a preliminary inquiry. Based on the complaint filed by the student, an FIR has been registered against the professor.
Authorities said they are examining CCTV footage and recording statements from students and staff to establish the sequence of events. “Appropriate legal action will be taken based on the evidence,” a police officer said.
The incident has raised serious concerns about boundaries and ethics in teacher-student relationships. College authorities are also expected to initiate internal disciplinary action.
