Mangaluru: Torrential rain that has battered Dakshina Kannada district over the past two days has triggered a major tragedy in Mangaluru. Three people, including two young children from the same family, lost their lives after a landslide caused a retaining wall to collapse onto their house.
The incident occurred at Naguri, near Kankanady in Mangaluru city. The deceased have been identified as Shantha (46), Anamika (8), and Tanu (4). The victims were natives of Bihar who had moved to Mangaluru for construction work and were living in a rented house in the area.
The tragedy took place between 4:45 am and 5:00 am on Wednesday, while the residents were asleep. Following continuous heavy rainfall, a retaining wall located on elevated ground near Marial House in Naguri became unstable and collapsed along with a large mass of earth onto four rented houses below.
The impact completely destroyed the rear portions of the houses, trapping several occupants beneath the debris. Rescue teams pulled out Lal Babu (37), his wife Indu (34), and their two daughters, all from Bihar, from under the rubble and rushed them to Father Muller Hospital for treatment.
Another resident, Balakrishna, and his wife Shantha were also rescued in an unconscious condition. Following the incident, Mangaluru City Police Commissioner Sudheer Kumar Reddy C.H., along with personnel from the NDRF, SDRF, and the Fire and Emergency Services, reached the spot and launched a rescue operation with the assistance of local residents.
Dakshina Kannada district has been witnessing incessant heavy rainfall since Tuesday night. Several low-lying areas have been inundated, while artificial flooding has disrupted traffic on many roads in Mangaluru, severely affecting normal life.
