Elderly couple tied up, robbed of gold worth Rs 8.4 lakh in Davanagere; five arrested from Tamil Nadu

Davanagere: Police have arrested five persons in connection with a daring robbery at an isolated farmhouse in Kakanur village of Channagiri taluk, where an elderly couple was tied up and assaulted before being robbed of gold ornaments worth Rs 8.40 lakh.

The arrested accused have been identified as Shivakumar from Hosur, Keshavan from Salem district, Arun Prashanth from Dindigul district, Arasu from Tiruvannamalai, and Kaladevi from Namakkal in Tamil Nadu. Police said property worth nearly Rs 14 lakh has been recovered from the accused.

According to the police, the robbery took place on the night of September 6, 2025. The gang, consisting of five masked individuals, allegedly noticed that the door of the house was open and barged in.

Madappa, who was watching television at the time, was overpowered and tied up with his dhoti. His wife, Savitramma, who was in the kitchen, was also restrained with ropes.

The accused reportedly assaulted the couple and threatened them with dire consequences. Apart from snatching the gold ornaments the couple was wearing, the gang forced them to hand over valuables kept in a cupboard. The entire operation was carried out swiftly before the gang fled the scene.

The couple’s son was away on work when the incident occurred. The victims, both retired government employees, had spent several years in coastal Karnataka before moving to their farmhouse in Channagiri after retirement to live with their only son.

Based on a complaint, a case was registered and a special team was formed to trace the culprits. After weeks of investigation, police tracked the accused to Tamil Nadu and arrested them in a coordinated operation. Officials said the gang is suspected to be involved in several similar robbery cases across Karnataka and Tamil Nadu.

Investigations have revealed that the gang entered Karnataka via Chitradurga and targeted isolated houses in rural areas. Police are also probing whether the accused had any local support or informants who tipped them off about vulnerable households.

Further investigation is underway to ascertain the full extent of the gang’s criminal network and possible links to other pending cases.
