Delhi Red Fort Metro blast: 8 dead, 24 injured; national capital on high alert
Delhi : At least eight people lost their lives and 24 others sustained injuries after a powerful explosion ripped through a car near Gate No. 1 of Delhiβs Red Fort (Lal Qila) Metro Station on Monday evening. The blast caused the car to burst into flames, spreading fire to several nearby vehicles, many of which were completely gutted.
Eyewitnesses reported that the explosion was so intense that streetlights in the surrounding area went out momentarily, creating panic among commuters and residents.
The Delhi Fire Department confirmed that a distress call was received around 6:55 pm, following which seven fire tenders and 15 CAT ambulances rushed to the scene. Firefighters brought the blaze under control after several nearby vehicles, estimated between five and six, were damaged by the spreading flames.
The incident has prompted authorities to place Delhi on high alert. This comes just a day after a massive terror module was dismantled, with nearly 2,900 kilograms of bomb-making material seized, heightening concerns about possible follow-up attacks.
Mumbai Police have also stepped up security measures, increasing patrolling and conducting checks at critical locations in response to the blast in the national capital.
Casualties from the explosion have been admitted to LNJP Hospital, where medical teams are providing urgent care. Senior officials, including the Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) of the Special Cell, have reached the site to oversee the ongoing investigation.
Authorities are reviewing CCTV footage and collecting forensic evidence to ascertain the cause of the blast and determine whether it is linked to any larger terror network. The area around the Red Fort Metro Station has been cordoned off, and investigations are continuing as emergency services work to restore normalcy in the vicinity.
