Asia Cup 2025 Squad: Shubman Gill gets captaincy promotion

Asia Cup 2025 Squad: Reports and speculation are swirling around the upcoming announcement of India’s squad for the Asia Cup 2025, with several key points emerging from news sources. Asia Cup 2025 Squad: Shubman Gill gets captaincy promotion.

The official announcement is expected to be made by the Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee sometime in mid-to-late August. According to multiple reports, young opener Yashasvi Jaiswal is likely to be left out of the squad.

The primary reason seems to be a settled top-order, with the selectors not wanting to disturb the core group that has performed well under Suryakumar Yadav’s captaincy.

The top five of Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson, Suryakumar Yadav, Tilak Varma, and Hardik Pandya are reportedly settled for now, making it difficult for Jaiswal to find a place despite his strong claims and impressive IPL performances.

Shubman Gill’s Leadership Role:

Shubman Gill, who recently led India’s Test side with distinction, is set to be included in the T20I squad. He is expected to be named as the vice-captain for the Asia Cup, deputizing for Suryakumar Yadav.

This move signals not only Gill’s return to the T20I setup but also his growing role as a leader across formats, with some reports suggesting he is being groomed for the full-time ODI captaincy in the future.

Suryakumar Yadav’s Fitness:

There have been mixed reports regarding the fitness of T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav. Suryakumar, who underwent sports hernia surgery in June, has been at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru for rehabilitation. He has resumed batting in the nets, which is a positive sign.

However, some reports suggest he is yet to attain full match fitness and may need another week at the NCA to be completely ready. Despite this, he is expected to be fit and available to lead the side for the tournament, which begins on September 9.

The team is likely to maintain the core group from recent T20I series. Sanju Samson is expected to be the first-choice wicketkeeper, with Jitesh Sharma and Dhruv Jurel vying for the second spot.

Fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah is confirmed to be part of the squad, although there are discussions about managing his workload by resting him for matches against lesser opponents like UAE and Oman.
