This stance comes amidst heightened tensions between the two nations following recent events, including the Pahalgam terror attack. Former Indian cricketer Harbhajan emphasized that “cricket is too small a thing in front of the nation.” He highlighted the immense sacrifices made by soldiers on the border, stating that compared to their sacrifices, boycotting a cricket match is a very small matter.

He referred to the government’s stance that “blood and water cannot co-exist,” and argued that it is illogical to have a sporting contest when there are conflicts and tensions on the border. He believes that the nation’s interests should always come first, and until the major issues between the two countries are resolved, cricket should not be played.

Harbhajan’s comments follow a similar stand taken by the India Champions team, which he was a part of, during the recent World Championship of Legends. The Indian team refused to play against Pakistan in two matches of that tournament, citing the ongoing tensions. He has urged the current Indian team, led by Suryakumar Yadav, to take a similar position in the Asia Cup.
