Andre Russell announced retirement before IPL 2026 auction
Andre Russell has announced his retirement from playing in the Indian Premier League. The KKR legend will not be leaving the franchise, however, as he is set to join the Kolkata Knight Riders’ support staff for the 2026 season as the new “Power Coach.” Andre Russell announced retirement before IPL 2026 auction.
He stated he wants to leave a legacy and retire while people still feel he has more to offer. He also mentioned his strong loyalty to KKR, saying he felt “weird” seeing himself photoshopped in other teams’ jerseys after being released before the auction.
He will continue to play in other T20 leagues around the world and for the other Knight Riders franchises globally. Andre Russell’s IPL career was one of the most explosive and celebrated in the tournament’s history.
Russell played a total of 140 IPL matches, starting with the Delhi Daredevils (now Capitals) in 2012 before moving to the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in 2014, where he spent 11 of his 12 seasons.
Russell’s decision to retire came after he was released by KKR ahead of the 2026 auction. He stated that the timing was intentional, as he wanted to leave a lasting legacy.

He said he wanted to retire when fans were still asking, “Why? You still have some more in you…” instead of suggesting he should have done it years ago.
Russell revealed that seeing himself “photoshopped in different jerseys (of other teams)” made him feel “weird” and gave him “sleepless nights.” His strong attachment to the KKR franchise’s purple and gold colors led him to choose retirement over playing for another IPL team.
He confirmed that he had extensive discussions with KKR management (CEO Venky Mysore and co-owner Shah Rukh Khan) about a new chapter, which is transitioning into the role of “Power Coach” for the 2026 season. He will continue to play in other T20 leagues around the world, including for the other Knight Riders franchises.
