Union Budget 2026: Nirmala Sitharaman announced earth corridors in 4 states

Union Budget 2026: During her record-breaking ninth consecutive Union Budget speech on February 1, 2026, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman indeed placed a massive strategic bet on Rare Earth Corridors.

This initiative is a centerpiece of the government’s push to decouple from global supply chain vulnerabilities—specifically reducing the heavy reliance on China, which currently dominates the global rare earth market.

The Rare Earth Corridors: A Four-State Strategic Network

The government will assist four mineral-rich states in establishing dedicated industrial corridors focused on rare earth elements (REEs):

Tamil Nadu

Kerala

Odisha

Andhra Pradesh

These corridors are designed to transform India’s coastal monazite beach sands into a high-tech manufacturing powerhouse. They will create an organized ecosystem for the entire value chain—from mining and mineral separation to the production of high-end oxides and metals.

Why “Rare Earths” Matter for 2026 and Beyond
Rare earth minerals are the “vitamins” of modern technology. The Finance Minister highlighted their critical role in three specific sectors:

Green Energy: Essential for high-performance magnets used in Electric Vehicle (EV) motors and wind turbine generators.

Defense & Aerospace: Vital for missile guidance systems, radar technology, jet engines, and drones.

High-Tech Electronics: Necessary for semiconductors, smartphones, MRI machines, and advanced sensors.

This announcement follows the Scheme for Rare Earth Permanent Magnets launched in November 2025. The new corridors will act as the physical infrastructure to support that scheme, with Kerala already signaling a massive ₹42,000 crore investment plan to become a “Permanent Magnet Hub.”
