As part of the revision, the government has decided to conduct a fresh verification of beneficiaries and make biometric authentication mandatory for receiving the monthly financial assistance of Rs 2,000.
The Gruha Lakshmi Scheme provides Rs 2,000 every month to the woman head of an eligible family. However, following complaints that several ineligible people have been availing the benefits, the government has introduced stricter verification measures.
Under the new rules, beneficiaries must have their own mobile number linked to the scheme and a bank account in their own name. Speaking to the media after the Cabinet meeting, Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar said biometric verification will now be compulsory for receiving the Gruha Lakshmi benefit.
He stressed that the registered mobile number must belong to the beneficiary herself so that official messages are sent directly to her. He also clarified that the financial assistance cannot be transferred to the bank accounts of the beneficiary’s husband or children. Instead, the money must be credited directly to the woman’s personal bank account.
Shivakumar said the government’s Guarantee Scheme team will conduct a door-to-door verification of beneficiaries. The state has allocated Rs 20 crore for this exercise, and officials are finalising the verification form and implementation process.
He emphasized that the government’s objective is not to remove eligible beneficiaries from the scheme, but to ensure that the financial assistance reaches the rightful recipients without misuse.
The government has launched a special verification drive, informally referred to as “Operation Gruha Lakshmi,” to identify genuine beneficiaries. The scheme currently has over 1.20 crore beneficiaries.
The names of deceased beneficiaries have already been removed, and around 4.30 lakh beneficiary records have been deleted so far. According to the government, this exercise is expected to save hundreds of crores of rupees by preventing ineligible claims while ensuring that the benefits reach deserving women.
