Lorry driver dies by suicide inside vehicle after drink-and-drive case in Bengaluru

Bengaluru : In a tragic incident, a lorry driver allegedly died by suicide inside his vehicle near a police station in JP Nagar after being booked in a drink-and-drive case. The deceased has been identified as Shanmuga, who was reportedly distressed after being fined by the police.

According to police sources, the incident took place late on the night of April 04 during a special drive against drunk driving. Personnel attached to JP Nagar Police Station had intensified checking to curb traffic violations and ensure road safety.

During the checking, Shanmuga was stopped on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol. A breath analyser test confirmed that he had consumed alcohol beyond the permissible limit. Following this, police officials imposed a fine as per traffic rules and seized the lorry to prevent further risk to public safety.

The vehicle was later taken to the vicinity of the police station and parked. However, in a shocking turn of events, Shanmuga allegedly took the extreme step of ending his life by hanging himself inside the same lorry during the late hours of the night.

The incident came to light on the morning of April 05 when police personnel noticed the driver inside the vehicle in an unconscious state. Upon inspection, it was confirmed that he had died by suicide. The body was subsequently shifted for post-mortem examination.

Preliminary investigations suggest that the driver may have been mentally disturbed following the penalty imposed during the drink-and-drive check. However, officials have stated that the exact reason behind the suicide will be ascertained only after a detailed inquiry.

A case of unnatural death (UDR) has been registered at the JP Nagar police station, and further investigation is underway. Police are also examining whether any additional factors contributed to the incident.

The tragic episode has once again highlighted the mental stress faced by drivers and the need for greater awareness and support mechanisms, especially in high-pressure situations involving law enforcement action.
