Controversy erupts over Manoj Bajpayee’s film ‘Ghuskhore Pandat’ title
Bengaluru: Controversies surrounding films have become increasingly common in recent years, with objections frequently raised over alleged insults to communities, religions, professions, or social groups.
The latest to join this list is acclaimed actor Manoj Bajpayee’s upcoming film Ghuskhore Pandat. The trailer of the movie was released on Monday, but instead of applause, it has sparked outrage over its title, with several social media users demanding a change and threatening to boycott the film.
The film, starring Manoj Bajpayee in the lead role, presents him as a tough, aggressive, and corrupt police officer. The trailer hints at a gritty storyline revolving around abuse of power, moral conflicts, and institutional corruption. While Bajpayee’s intense performance has been widely appreciated, the title of the film has drawn sharp criticism.
The term “Ghuskhore” in Hindi translates to “corrupt” or “intruder,” and when combined with the word “Pandat” (a modified version of “Pandit”), many believe it portrays a particular community in a negative light. Critics argue that the title appears to target the Brahmin community and deliberately uses a derogatory connotation.
According to reports, the original title of the film was Ghuskhore Pandit, but it was altered to Ghuskhore Pandat following suggestions from the censor board. However, the minor change in spelling has done little to calm public anger. Social media platforms have been flooded with posts accusing the makers of disrespecting religious sentiments.
Several users have questioned whether such a title would have been used if it referred to any other community. “Would the makers dare to name a film ‘Ghuskhore Muslim’ or ‘Ghuskhore Dalit’?” one user asked, echoing the sentiments of many others. Hashtags calling for a boycott of the film have also started trending.
In the movie, Manoj Bajpayee plays a character named Ajay Dixit, a police officer who is nicknamed “Pandit” by his colleagues. The title is reportedly derived from this nickname and reflects the flawed nature of the character. However, critics argue that using such a term in the title generalizes and demeans an entire community.
The film also features actress Nusrat Bharucha in a key role and has been directed by Riteish Shah. It is produced by well-known filmmaker Neeraj Pandey and is scheduled for a direct digital release on Netflix instead of a theatrical run.
As the controversy intensifies, it remains to be seen whether the filmmakers will respond to the backlash or consider changing the title. With emotions running high, the issue has once again highlighted the sensitive relationship between cinema and social sentiments in India.
