MB Patil’s letter seeking renaming of four railway stations in Karnataka

Karnataka’s Minister for Infrastructure Development, M.B. Patil, has recently sent a formal recommendation to the Union Ministry of Home Affairs seeking the renaming of four railway stations in the state to honor prominent local saints and reflect cultural significance.

The letter proposes the following four railway stations for renaming:

1.Vijayapura Railway Station – Jnana Yogi Sri Siddeshwara Swamiji Railway Station – Jnana Yogi Sri Siddeshwara Swamiji

2. Belagavi Railway Station – Sri Basava Mahaswamiji Railway Station – Sri Basava Mahaswamiji

3. Bidar Railway Station – Channabasava Pattadevaru Railway Station – Channabasava Pattadevaru

4. Sooragondanakoppa (in Shivamogga district)  – Bhayagada Railway Station – Bhayagada

The Minister has emphasized that the saints proposed have made significant contributions to the respective regions of Karnataka. The final approval for the renaming is required from the Union Ministry of Home Affairs before it can be officially notified in the government gazette.

All four railway stations fall under the jurisdiction of the Hubballi Division of South Western Railway.

Many railway stations have been renamed in the past. Bangalore City Junction was renamed after Kranti Veera Sangolli Rayanna, Hubballi Junction was renamed after Siddharoodha Swamiji Hubballi Junction, Haveri was renamed as Mahadevappa Mailara Railway Station, and Bangalore’s Baiyappanahalli station was renamed after Sir M Visvesvaraya.
